NYC5 is a guide to the parts of New York that belong to everyone — the courts, pools, runs and rinks the city maintains, and the practical detail the map apps leave out.
It is in development. The work is slower than a scrape because most of what makes a public space usable is not in any dataset: whether the lights stay on, whether the gate is locked, when the good runs happen, whether the rims have nets.
What is being built
- A directory of public amenities
- Every city-run basketball court, dog run, outdoor pool and skating rink, mapped and filterable, with the condition notes that decide whether a trip is worth it.
- Five picks per borough
- Short, opinionated guides. Five courts, five runs, five pools. Written by people who have actually been.
- Open near you now
- One question answered well: what is open, close by, at this hour, in this season.
